Asphalt paving | Know how many layers are needed

Asphalt paving, essential for road infrastructure, is made up of multiple-layer structures, with the coating being the crucial layer to support the load of vehicles and resist climate impacts, such as rain and erosion. In this context, it is imperative that this layer is both waterproof and wear-resistant.

As the load and speed of vehicles fluctuate, the tire's contact efforts with the pavement can result in deformations in the asphalt, manifesting as cracks and holes on avenues and highways. In the context of asphalt paving, it is vital to meet the strict specifications established by the DNIT Standards. This compliance ensures that the volume of traffic does not compromise the integrity of the hot asphalt mixtures, preserving the durability of the material and, at the same time, guaranteeing safety during the movement of vehicles on the pavement.

What is asphalt paving?

Asphalt paving, a fundamental procedure for covering urban roads, such as streets, avenues and highways, involves the application of a mixture composed of asphalt aggregates and binders. Defined as a stratified structure of finite thickness, the pavement is constructed below the final earthwork surface.

Developed to resist traffic demands and climatic influences, the pavements aim to improve the conditions of use of urban roads, ensuring safety during traffic. Asphalt paving makes it possible to create a semi-rigid, chemically cemented base, which forms the covering of earthwork structures. There are rigid, flexible and semi-rigid pavements, each with different granulometric properties.

To ensure the quality and safety of the paving process, the Vila Betume asphalt plant stands out by employing the most efficient means of production. We have specialized engineers in our factory, ensuring excellence in the execution of asphalt paving.

How many layers are needed for asphalt paving?

With regard to the essential layers for earthwork paving, several steps are incorporated into this process, including the subgrade, subbase, base, bonding layer and asphalt coating. The phases of asphalt paving are detailed below:

1. Sub-grade:This layer refers to the natural terrain of the location where the road will be built. Depending on the paving application, reinforcement may be necessary to increase the rigidity of this layer.

2. Sub-base: Composed of granular elements, this layer may or may not contain a binding element to form the grain size of the material.

3. Base: Responsible for receiving the weight of the upper layers and distributing it to the sub-base. At this stage, the asphalt must be resistant to mechanical impacts.

4. Bond layer:This layer acts as the interface between the asphalt coating and the base, also known as the blinder. It is composed of asphalt cement and aggregates.

5. Asphalt coating:The upper layer, in direct contact with car tires, has the function of distributing the load with the other layers.

Understanding the stages of asphalt paving, it is clear that the process goes beyond the asphalt coating layer, including internal elements in the earthwork paving process.

As for Standard DNIT 031/2004 – ES, which establishes the procedures for asphalt paving, it regulates the stages of this process. According to the standard, the distribution and compaction of the asphalt concrete mixture must be carried out using appropriate equipment, as provided. The importance of the asphalt plant in Cariacica – ES providing quality material is highlighted. Irregularities on the surface of the layer must be corrected by manually adding asphalt concrete, spread using metal rakes and squeegees. Rolling, initiated after this process, applies a higher temperature to the asphalt mixture at the asphalt plant in São Paulo - SP.
